Hyderabad: Residents of the Karwan constituency have expressed serious concerns over non-functional street lights in several areas, warning that the lack of lighting is endangering public safety and increasing the risk of crimes and accidents.

The Good Governance Forum Karwan, a local civic group, submitted a formal letter to the Superintendent Engineer (Electrical) of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) at Tank Bund Road, urging immediate action from the authorities.

In the letter, the forum stated that several streets across Karwan remain in darkness during night hours, causing severe inconvenience and posing safety risks, especially for women, children, and senior citizens. The group pointed out that poor visibility in these areas has led to a rise in fear among residents, who are concerned about thefts, accidents, and other anti-social activities.

The letter highlighted that the problem is widespread, affecting various localities within the constituency. Among the affected areas are Ashok Vihar Colony, Amlapur Joshiwadi Complex, Ramsinghpura, Upper Basthi, Maruthi Nagar, Satyanarayana Nagar, and Jafferguda in the Gudimalkapur division.

In the Karwan division, street lights are reportedly non-functional near Shishu Mandir School, Banjawadi, Girkapally, Kanakadurga Nagar, Kranthi Bhavan Line, Heera Nagar, and Shivaji Nagar. The issue also extends to the Langer House division, where residents of Prashant Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Defence Colony, Ibrahim Bagh, Vinayak Nagar, Haridaspura, and One More Nagar have reported similar complaints.

A major stretch between Tappachabutra and the Golconda main road, as well as other key connecting roads, were also identified as critical areas needing immediate repairs. The residents have called on the GHMC and the electricity department to arrange for the repair or replacement of non-functional street lights in these locations without further delay.

Commuters have echoed these concerns. Ashwini, a daily traveler, pointed out that a three-kilometer stretch near Rajendranagar and the airport junction along the Outer Ring Road is completely unlit. “There are no lights on that stretch. It’s dangerous, especially at night,” she said, urging the authorities to act swiftly.

In addition to street lighting issues, residents dealing with water and sewerage problems can contact the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) at 155313 or 040-23300114, or through its official social media platforms. The GHMC can be reached for civic-related concerns via its official handle on X (@GHMCOnline).
