JNTUH students push for higher compound wall in Hyderabad after security scare at girls’ hostel
Hyderabad: Students of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH), along with the member of BJP Yuva Morcha Telangana, have formally raised concerns about the safety of students at the university’s Gayatri Girls Hostel following a security breach on April 22, 2025.
In a letter submitted to the university registrar and addressed to the Vice Chancellor, Rector, and Principal of JNTUH, the group requested an immediate increase in the height of the compound wall near the hostel, which is located adjacent to the main road near a U-turn, opposite the Zudio shopping mall in Kukatpally.
The letter detailed a late-night incident on April 22, when an unknown individual attempted to intrude into the hostel premises around 11:40 p.m. According to the complaint, the person climbed onto a nearby bus stand roof and began shouting at the girls inside the hostel. He then allegedly tried to jump over the compound wall, causing panic among the students. Some students captured photos of the incident.
“This is not the first time such an incident has occurred,” said Ramakrishna Reddy Challa, pointing to recurring safety concerns at the hostel.
Ramakrishna Reddy Challa, a PhD research scholar at JNTUH and BJP Yuva Morcha Telangana’s State Convenor of the Intellectual & Professional Cell, led the representation. He highlighted the need to increase the height of the wall facing the main road to deter intruders and improve the hostel’s security.
Students Ramakrishna, Sandeep, Ranjith, Kiran, and Jayaram were among those who submitted the request.
The group urged university authorities to treat the matter with urgency and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of hostel residents.
