CBDT extends Income Tax Returns filing deadline to September 15 for AY 2025-26
Hyderabad: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025-26 from July 31 to September 15, 2025.
The extension comes in light of recent changes made to the structure and content of the notified ITR forms. These revisions are aimed at simplifying compliance, improving transparency, and ensuring accurate reporting. However, they have also required additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the related ITR utilities.
According to the CBDT, credits from Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) statements, due to be filed by May 31, 2025, are expected to reflect only in early June. This would have left taxpayers with a narrow window for return filing under the original deadline.
In a statement, V. Rajitha, Commissioner of Income Tax (Media & Technical Policy) & Official Spokesperson, said the extension is intended to provide sufficient time for taxpayers and ensure a smooth filing process. A formal notification will be issued separately. The move is expected to address concerns raised by stakeholders and support accurate and timely compliance.
