Hyderabad launches Indiramma Canteens to provide ₹5 meals
HYDERABAD: District in-charge minister Ponnam Prabhakar and mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi on Monday inaugurated Indiramma Canteens at Motinagar and the Mint Campus in Khairatabad. The initiative aims to provide nutritious meals at highly subsidised rates to underprivileged citizens in Hyderabad.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will subsidise ₹14 per breakfast and ₹24.83 per meal, serving breakfast at ₹5 and lunch at ₹5. Officials said beneficiaries could save up to ₹3,000 a month on food expenses. The Hare Krishna Hare Rama Foundation is providing operational support.
Support for low-income groups
The scheme will particularly benefit daily wage earners, auto drivers, small vendors, unemployed youth, and sanitation workers. At the launch, the minister, mayor, MP Anil Kumar Yadav, MLA Danam Nagender, GHMC commissioner RV Karnan, and senior officials served breakfast to beneficiaries and shared meals with sanitation workers. Minister Prabhakar said: “Guided by the chief minister’s vision, we have launched Indiramma Canteens to ensure affordable meals for all. Though we shoulder a financial burden, we commit to providing quality food at nominal prices for the below poverty people.
He added that the state government was also implementing welfare schemes such as free bus travel for women, free household electricity, and interest-free loans.
Focus on women’s empowerment
Mayor Vijayalaxmi said:
“Indiramma Canteens are a lifeline for the below poverty. We plan to expand this initiative by opening 150 canteens across Greater Hyderabad. Self Help Groups (SHGs) will be prioritised for running canteens.”
MP Anil Kumar Yadav noted that the Mint Campus canteen would benefit poor and low-income families. MLA Danam Nagender suggested that canteen operations be entrusted to SHGs to strengthen community participation.
Officials said the programme underscores the government’s commitment to poverty alleviation, social welfare, and inclusive urban development.
