HYDERABAD: Indian students heading overseas for education and jobs are increasingly facing health, financial and safety challenges, according to data released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Between 2018 and 2024, a total of 842 Indian students died abroad, the ministry said. The causes include health problems, suicides and road accidents. A smaller number lost their lives in shootings and criminal attacks.
Most deaths reported in the United States, says report
The United States recorded the highest number of deaths with 141 students, followed by Dubai with 133, Canada with 119, and Qatar and Australia with 57 each.
Health issues, suicides and accidents major causes
According to the MEA, 96% of these deaths were due to health-related issues, suicides or road accidents, while 4% occurred in shooting incidents.
As of January 2024, around 13.3 lakh Indian students were studying abroad, mainly in the United States, Canada and other countries. Many take up part-time jobs to support themselves while pursuing higher education. Officials noted that these students often face psychological stress, health problems and safety concerns, particularly due to rising incidents of racial discrimination and attacks.
