IIT Hyderabad granted Institute of National Eminence status with 100% tax exemption on donations
Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has been granted the status of an Institute of National Eminence by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. As a result, donations to the institute will now be eligible for 100% tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income-tax Act, 1961.
Previously, donations to IITH qualified for a 50% tax exemption. This new approval, effective from March 27, 2025, is expected to encourage more individuals and organizations to contribute, further supporting the institute's efforts in advancing education, research, and infrastructure development.
The recognition of IITH as an Institute of National Eminence underscores its growing influence in the fields of science, technology, and innovation. The enhanced tax exemption will provide significant momentum to the institute's academic and research initiatives.
Prof. B.S. Murty, Director of IITH, welcomed the decision, inviting philanthropists, corporate partners, and other well-wishers to support the institute’s mission. He highlighted that the increased tax benefit provides a valuable opportunity for contributors to support transformative education, groundbreaking research, and technology development.
Prof. Mahendrakumar Madhavan, Dean of ACR, noted, "It is a gratifying experience to contribute to a cause that benefits society, and now, with the 100% tax exemption, giving becomes even more rewarding. This recognition will provide a significant boost to IITH’s research and development initiatives."
IITH, established in 2008, has quickly become a leader in academia, research, and innovation. In the latest National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF 2024), IITH ranked 3rd for innovation and 8th among engineering institutes in India.
