The 58-acre lake, located near Cherlapally Central Jail, is planned to be modernized and beautified. Officials inspected the lake’s inlet and outlet points and noted that while water levels are currently low, the water quality supports local biodiversity. They agreed that the lake’s appeal would improve with increased water levels.

Discussions focused on developing the lake as a tourist and recreational site. Plans include strengthening the bund, constructing a 3-kilometer pathway, fencing, solar lighting, and CCTV surveillance for safety. HYDRAA’s Irrigation Engineering Division was tasked with preparing a detailed project report.

Cherlapally Lake receives water from a connected chain of lakes, including Hakeempet, Nagireddykunta, Kapra Lake, Motukula Kunta, and Bison Kunta. A diversion drain has been built to prevent sewage contamination.

The development will feature walking paths, mini parks, tree planting, and seating facilities, aimed at attracting both local residents and visitors. Industrial representatives from the area have shown interest in contributing funds through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. Director General Soumya Mishra highlighted the need for a detailed cost estimate to facilitate CSR funding.

Before the inspection, officials from the Prisons Department presented a PowerPoint with video footage and development proposals. The visit included HYDRAA Additional Director of Fire Services Varla Papayya, IG of Prisons Murali Babu, DIGs Dr. Srinivas and Sampath, Cherlapally Central Jail Superintendent Shivakumar Goud, and Open Jail Superintendent Venkateshwarlu.
