Hyderabad: A sewage contamination threat to Gandipet (Osman Sagar), a major drinking water source for Hyderabad, was prevented following urgent action by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA). Sewage from Khanapur and Nagulapally, flowing through the Bulkapur Nala, was on the verge of entering the reservoir due to damaged gates.

Acting on media reports, HYDRAA officials inspected the site and immediately replaced the old shutters with new ones at a cost of ₹2 lakh. The existing gates, which had deteriorated over time, were allowing water inflows during floods. During the inspection, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath directed officials to carry out immediate repairs. The agency also cleared accumulated waste from the nala to ensure smoother flow of wastewater away from Gandipet.

Bulkapur Nala, originally a flood canal, now carries sewage from residential and commercial areas. It originates from Bulkapur tank in Shankarpalli and passes through several localities before draining into Hussain Sagar. Residents pointed out the historical importance of the nala as the only drainage channel carrying rainwater into Hussain Sagar. HYDRAA has now begun efforts to fully restore the nala.
