According to the Hyderabad cybercrime police, the victim contacted the seller via WhatsApp at +91 72759 82926. She was asked to transfer the amount through Google Pay to the number provided by the fraudster, which she did. Shortly after, the fraudster claimed additional shipping charges were required and shared a QR code for further payment. The victim was assured that the initial payment would be refunded.

Trusting the seller, the victim made the additional payment and received a payment receipt. However, the fraudster then called her via WhatsApp, requesting that she should share her screen to complete the refund process. Following the instructions, the victim unknowingly authorized multiple payment requests sent through Google Pay.

As a result, the victim lost a total of Rs. 1,23,796 (Rs. 1.24 lakh) in multiple transactions. After the payments were made, the fraudster stopped responding to the victim’s calls and messages, leaving her with no recourse.

Public Advisory:

Cybercrime experts have warned that fraudsters are using fake Instagram pages to lure victims with discounted product advertisements. Once the victim contacts the seller via WhatsApp, they are asked to transfer money through Google Pay or UPI. After the initial payment, the fraudster requests additional funds under various pretenses, such as shipping charges or refunds.

Victims are then manipulated into sharing their screens, allowing the fraudster to gain control over their accounts and authorize unauthorized transactions. Once the money is received, the fraudster disappears.

To avoid falling victim to such scams:

Verify the authenticity of online sellers by checking for genuine reviews and official websites.

Avoid direct bank transfers; use secure payment gateways that offer buyer protection.

Be cautious of requests for additional payments after an initial purchase.

Never share your screen with unknown contacts, as fraudsters use this to manipulate transactions.

If you encounter suspicious accounts, report them to Instagram and the authorities. Victims of cyber fraud can contact cybercrime authorities at 1930 or visit cybercrime.gov.in. In case of emergency, report fraud via WhatsApp at 8712665171.
