Hyderabad woman alleges assault, abuse by Chicago cop husband, seeks MEA help
HYDERABAD: A 25-year-old woman from Hyderabad has accused her husband, a Chicago police officer, of mental harassment and physical assault in the US, and of later abandoning her in India after taking away her travel and identity documents.
In a letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on August 22, the woman, Hana Ahmed Khan, sought urgent help to recover her passport, green card and jewellery so she could return to the US to pursue legal action.
Khan alleged that her husband, Mohammed Zain Uddin, a US national, had been abusive since their marriage in Hyderabad on June 22, 2022.
‘Faced abuse in US’
She said Uddin returned to the US soon after their wedding and refused to take her with him for nearly two years. She joined him in Chicago on February 17, 2024, after he processed her visa.
“Upon my arrival, I was subjected to emotional abuse, physical harassment and mental torture. Despite these challenges, I remained hopeful the situation would improve. However, the mistreatment continued,” she wrote.
She told reporters she once called the police after an assault. “The cops let him off with a warning,” she said, adding that Uddin coerced her into starting divorce proceedings against her wishes.
‘Left stranded in Hyderabad’
Khan said after she received her Social Security Card and Green Card, Uddin suggested reconciliation and proposed travel to India and then Umrah in Saudi Arabia. But during their stay in Hyderabad, he allegedly left the hotel without notice and removed her belongings.
“On returning, I found my passport, green card and jewellery missing,” she said.
Dowry complaint also filed
In a separate police complaint, Khan alleged her family spent ₹20 lakh on the wedding and gave gold and gifts as dowry.
There was no immediate comment from Uddin or his lawyer, though reports suggested he claimed the couple separated by mutual consent and that divorce proceedings were underway in the US.
Authorities in both India and the US are yet to respond.
