Hyderabad Water Board launches real-time fieldwork monitoring system
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has introduced a 'Live Location Fieldwork Monitoring System' to enhance its operations, as reported by Sakshi News. The new system eliminates the need for offline and online reports, offering real-time tracking of field activities. This initiative aims to improve service delivery and keep up with technological advancements.
The Water Board has mapped its drinking water supply and sewerage network using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. This mapping is integrated with mobile applications and a centralised dashboard for live monitoring. The dashboard allows real-time updates from field operations to the Managing Director's office. Each section of the Water Board now has its own dashboard for field-level monitoring.
Five years ago, under the leadership of M. Dana Kishore, the then Managing Director, the board began mapping the city's water and sewerage systems using GPS technology. The initiative, in collaboration with the National Informatics Institute, created a digital base map of pipelines and manholes. The project was delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic but was completed in 2023.
In recent months, the board has expanded its use of dashboards to monitor various services, including desilting, sewerage cleaning, tanker tracking, and water quality management. Future plans include additional dashboards for projects, reservoirs, sewage treatment plants, revenue tracking, and vehicle monitoring.
Ashok Reddy, the current Managing Director, highlighted that the dashboards are helping track staff performance and improve operations. "The dashboards allow us to monitor fieldwork effectively, especially in sewerage operations," he said. A central control room will coordinate these monitoring activities.
The Water Board has also developed a mobile app based on GIS for field staff, including section managers and field supervisors. This app connects to the main server and provides live updates on sewerage pipeline cleaning and desilting. The system has led to improved field performance and better coordination.
With these technological upgrades, the HMWSSB aims to provide more efficient and transparent services to Hyderabad's residents.
