Hyderabad Water Board faces ₹2,014 crore dues from govt offices
HYDERABAD: The Forum for Good Governance (FGG) has appealed to Telangana chief minister to intervene and direct state and central government departments to clear water and sewerage bills pending with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB).
Forum urges CM to direct departments to clear long-pending dues
In a representation dated September 30, 2025, Forum president M Padmanabha Reddy said unpaid bills from various departments had crossed ₹2,014.41 crore. Of this, ₹1,764.18 crore is due from state departments and ₹250.23 crore from central organisations and public sector units.
According to details provided by the Water Board, the highest outstanding is from Mission Bhageeratha at ₹1,011.30 crore, followed by Panchayat Raj and Rural Development department at ₹377.29 crore. Other major defaulters include the Health, Medical and Family Welfare department (₹109.69 crore), Housing department (₹57.55 crore), Home department (₹40.86 crore) and Education department (₹19.02 crore).
FGG pointed out that citizens are paying water tax and drainage tax both to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation under Section 199 of the GHMC Act and to the Water Board for the same service, while government offices and even staff quarters of some departments have not cleared dues for years.
“The main source of revenue to the Water Board is water charges. If these payments are not made, the Board will face financial problems and the quality of services will be affected,” Reddy said in his letter. He urged the chief minister to instruct heads of departments to clear pending bills immediately.
