Vanastalipuram sewer trunk line collapses, urgent repairs on
HYDERABAD: A major sewer trunk pipeline near Old Bombay–Vijayawada Highway in Vanastalipuram collapsed about 20 feet deep, prompting emergency repair works. Heavy rains damaged the 900-mm diameter reinforced cement concrete trunk main, which was built nearly 25 years ago by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Four years ago, the responsibility for sewerage maintenance was handed over to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).
Five-km stretch affected by leakage
Following the damage, nearly five kilometres of the downstream sewer line developed leakages, affecting colonies including Gandhinagar, Snehmai Nagar, PVR Colony, Padmavati Colony, Veeranjaneya Colony, Sama Nagar, Sharada Nagar, Shantinagar and Telangana Padmavati Colony. Local tanks overflowed, causing sewage issues. Officials said urgent repairs are under way.
MD inspects repair works
HMWSSB managing director Ashok Reddy inspected the site on Tuesday and reviewed the progress with officials. He directed that road restoration be taken up immediately after the pipeline repair and asked teams to locate clogged manholes along the stretch. "Repairs should be completed quickly," he told officials.
Measures to prevent rainwater mixing with sewage
Reddy also instructed officials to ensure that rainwater does not enter the sewer system. At Gurranguda Reserve Forest highway crossing, he reviewed sewage inflows from Tirumalanagar, Srisri Homes, Madhura Nagar and Meerpet municipal corporations that aggravate the problem during monsoon. He asked for immediate gap works to prevent rainwater from mixing with sewage.
He further directed the Operations and Maintenance (O&M), Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and project teams to work in coordination and divert sewage to local STPs for treatment instead of discharging into the Musi river.
Senior officials, including HMWSSB chief general manager Nagender and general managers Balaramaraju and Mahender Naik, accompanied him.
