Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Traffic Police have taken strict action against traffic violations in recent weeks, registering thousands of cases during special enforcement drives.

Between May 20 and May 26, 2025, police booked 14,917 cases of wrong-side driving and 3,881 cases related to number plate violations. The force announced these figures via their official X (formerly Twitter) account under the campaign titled, “Special Drive Against Number Plate Violations & Wrong Side Driving.”

Earlier, from March 31 to April 6, 2025, a similar drive recorded 13,498 cases of wrong-side driving and 2,514 cases of number plate violations. In a public appeal, the Hyderabad Traffic Police urged citizens to follow traffic rules to ensure road safety and shared their helpline number, 9010203626, for assistance and reporting violations.

Meanwhile, the Cyberabad Traffic Police conducted a special operation targeting drunk driving over the weekend, apprehending 252 individuals driving under the influence of alcohol. Authorities seized 199 two-wheelers, 10 three-wheelers, and 43 four-wheelers; no heavy vehicles were confiscated during this drive.

Of those caught, 228 had blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Eighteen individuals recorded BAC levels from 201 mg/100 ml to 300 mg/100 ml, while six had dangerously high BAC levels between 301 mg/100 ml and 500 mg/100 ml.

Age-wise, most individuals were between 21 and 40 years old. Three were aged 18–20, 92 were in the 21–30 range, 87 were 31–40, 54 between 41–50, 11 aged 51–60, and five were 61 or older. No minors were involved.

All 252 individuals were produced before the court. The Cyberabad Traffic Police warned motorists against drunk driving, highlighting the risks it poses to all road users. They noted that if drunk driving results in a fatal accident, accused could be charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine.

In a similar drive the previous weekend (May 17–18), 306 individuals were booked for drunk driving. During that operation, police seized 306 vehicles, including 246 two-wheelers, 9 three-wheelers, 50 four-wheelers, and one heavy vehicle. All those apprehended in that drive were male.
