Traffic fines cross ₹1,117 crore in two years in Telangana

HYDERABAD: Traffic enforcement in Telangana has intensified, with fines worth ₹1,117 crore levied on motorists over the past two years. Between January and June this year alone, penalties of ₹412 crore were collected, averaging ₹2.25 crore a day.

Officials said violations such as signal jumping, crossing the stop line, and riding without helmets are being detected instantly by automated cameras, which then generate e-challans.

Steep rise in penalties

Data shows fines rose by 56% in the first six months of 2025 compared to the same period last year — from ₹265 crore to ₹412 crore. Authorities expect total penalties to exceed ₹800 crore by December.

According to the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, the state must reduce road accidents by 30% by year-end. Enforcement is therefore expected to remain strict.

More cameras across Telangana

Currently, the police department has installed 792 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras — 549 within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits and 243 in districts.

The transport department has invited tenders for 60 more cameras and proposed 100 additional electronic enforcement devices at accident-prone locations.

How ANPR cameras work

These cameras scan vehicle number plates and relay data to the traffic control room. The system automatically checks details such as driving licence and insurance validity. Any violation is flagged, and a challan is issued.
