Earlier, on March 27, 2025, Telangana Weatherman had warned of intense heat, with North Telangana reaching 41°C and Hyderabad at 39-40°C. He clarified that while the heat was intense, it did not qualify as a heatwave, as such temperatures are normal for this time of year. He further predicted a decrease in temperature after March 31 and dry weather until April 1, followed by storms.
In response to the rising temperatures, the Telangana government, through the Office of the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, issued an advisory to protect citizens from the heat. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad, maximum temperatures across the state are expected to rise by 2-3°C.
Advisory for Protection Against Heat
Do's:
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even if not thirsty. Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) and homemade drinks like lemon water, buttermilk, and fruit juices are recommended. Carry water while traveling.
• Eat seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, musk melon, oranges, grapes, cucumbers, and lettuce.
• Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothing and cover your head with an umbrella, hat, or towel when outdoors. Footwear should be worn to avoid contact with hot surfaces.
• Limit outdoor activities to early morning or evening when the temperature is cooler.
• Stay indoors in well-ventilated, cool spaces. Keep windows and curtains closed during the day, especially on the sunny side of the house, and open them at night to allow cooler air in.
• Stay updated with weather alerts via local radio stations, TV, or the IMD website: mausam.imd.gov.in.
Don'ts:
• Avoid going out in the sun between 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m., as this is when the sun’s rays are the strongest.
• Refrain from strenuous activities, particularly in the afternoon heat.
• Avoid walking barefoot in the sun, and do not cook during peak heat hours. If cooking is necessary, ensure proper ventilation.
• Avoid consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, carbonated soft drinks, and sugary beverages, as they can lead to dehydration. High-protein, salty, spicy, and oily foods should also be avoided.
Heat-Related Illnesses
The government has also issued a warning about heat-related illnesses, which include nausea, vomiting, hot and dry skin, a body temperature exceeding 40°C (104°F), a throbbing headache, dizziness, fainting, muscle cramps, rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, and confusion. Immediate medical attention is advised if any of these symptoms occur.
To assist with heat-related emergencies, the government has made provisions for special beds, intravenous fluids, essential medicines, and ORS sachets at public health facilities. Community health workers like ANMs, ASHAs, and Anganwadi workers are also on hand to support citizens.
This advisory was issued by Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, Telangana, as part of the state’s efforts to safeguard its residents during the ongoing heatwave.
