Rising Temperatures Prompt Heatwave Advisory

In light of rising temperatures over the next few days, the Telangana government, through the Office of the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, has issued a heatwave advisory. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Hyderabad has predicted that maximum temperatures across the state will rise by 2-3°C.

To protect citizens from the heat, the government has recommended staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even if not feeling thirsty. Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS), lemon water, buttermilk, and fruit juices are also advised. People are encouraged to carry water when traveling. Eating seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, musk melon, oranges, grapes, cucumbers, and lettuce, is another important measure to stay hydrated.

When venturing outdoors, wearing loose, light-colored cotton clothing is recommended. Additionally, covering the head with an umbrella, hat, or towel can help protect from direct sunlight, and wearing shoes or chappals can prevent contact with hot surfaces. The government also suggests limiting outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning and evening, and staying indoors in cool, well-ventilated spaces. It is also advised to keep windows and curtains closed during the day, especially on the sunny side of the house, and open them at night to allow cooler air in.

Precautions to Avoid Heat Stress

Citizens are also warned to avoid going out in the sun between 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m., when the sun's rays are strongest. Strenuous physical activities, particularly in the afternoon, should be avoided, and walking barefoot in the sun is discouraged. If cooking is necessary, it should be done with proper ventilation to minimize heat buildup. The consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, carbonated soft drinks, sugary beverages, and high-protein, salty, spicy, or oily foods should also be avoided, as these can lead to dehydration. Stale food should be avoided as well.

The advisory also outlines the signs of heat-related illnesses, such as nausea, vomiting, dry skin, high body temperature (above 40°C), headaches, dizziness, fainting, muscle cramps, rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, and confusion. If any of these symptoms occur, immediate medical attention is recommended.

In response to the heatwave, special beds, intravenous fluids, essential medicines, and ORS sachets have been made available at public health facilities. Community health workers, including ANMs, ASHAs, and Anganwadi workers, are also equipped to assist in managing heat-related emergencies.

The advisory was issued by Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, Telangana, as part of the state's ongoing efforts to protect its citizens during the heatwave.
