Hyderabad logs 897mm monsoon rainfall, highest in 20 years

HYDERABAD: The southwest monsoon officially ended on September 30, marking a record-breaking season for Hyderabad with the highest rainfall in two decades. Data from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) shows the city received an average 897mm of rain between June and September, 43.7% above normal levels.

Of the total, 867mm fell during July to September, with the city missing the 900mm mark by just 3mm. This is the sixth consecutive year of “super excess” monsoon rainfall in the GHMC area.

Telangana too sees excess rainfall

The state of Telangana also recorded its sixth straight year of excess rainfall, with a seasonal total of 988.3mm, 33% above normal. The state missed the 1,000mm milestone by 11.7mm.

Strong recovery after weak June rains

Officials noted that the 2025 monsoon began with a weak spell in June but witnessed a sharp recovery later. “July to September brought back-to-back heavy rain events which pushed seasonal rainfall well above normal,” a weather department official said.

Both Hyderabad and Telangana have now recorded back-to-back years of surplus monsoon rainfall, continuing a trend of wetter seasons since 2020.
