Hyderabad: The Commissioners of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Ilambarathi, and the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), A.V. Ranganathan, on Wednesday reviewed the functionality of the "Sewer Croc" robotic device, which is designed to remove silt accumulated in sewer pipelines.

During a field visit, the commissioners observed the device in action on pipelines near the Secretariat. The Sewer Croc, powered by water-jet technology, works by propelling itself through the sewer lines while its turbine-driven blades remove silt and waste materials. This method eliminates the need for human intervention in manholes, offering a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional cleaning processes.

The commissioners assessed the effectiveness of the device, particularly in areas where sewerage and floodwater often inundate roads. They decided to implement pilot projects in areas prone to such issues, to further test and deploy the technology.

The Sewer Croc was previously used by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), as noted by Jermiah, the Chief Technical Officer of Ajantha Techno Solutions, during the visit.
