Residents oppose proposed graveyard site near Erragadda gated communities
HYDERABAD: Hundreds of residents from gated communities including Kalpataru, Brigade and Vasavi in Erragadda and Jubilee Hills gathered on Sunday to protest the government’s proposal to allot land for a Muslim graveyard near densely populated residential areas.
Residents claimed that the proposed site lies amid several large apartment complexes and schools, raising concerns about congestion and environmental impact. “We are not against any community, but locating a graveyard right next to our homes is impractical and insensitive to residents’ safety and sanitation needs,” said one protester.
Officials say allotment follows master plan
Sources in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) said the land allotment followed the master plan provisions and was meant to address the shortage of burial space in central Hyderabad. “The site has been identified as per community need and available government land,” an official said.
Police were deployed to manage the crowd as residents held placards demanding relocation of the graveyard to a less populated zone. The protest remained peaceful, and residents said they would submit a memorandum to the district collector seeking cancellation of the allotment.
