Hyderabad Rains: Heavy Downpour Triggers Severe Waterlogging, Traffic Jams Across City
Hyderabad: Heavy evening rains inundated Hyderabad, triggering widespread waterlogging, disrupting traffic, and stranding commuters for hours on Monday. Intense rainfall hit the city, with several areas recording precipitation levels classified as 'heavy' to 'very heavy.'
According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society, Banjara Hills received the highest rainfall in Hyderabad between 8:30 AM and 8:00 PM. The CMTC premises in Banjara Hills recorded 101.5 mm of rainfall. Venkateshwara Colony in the same area received 75.5 mm of rainfall. Other severely affected areas included Srinagar Colony (95.5 mm), CESS in Khairatabad (83.3 mm), Maitrivanam in Ameerpet (65.5 mm), and Jawahar Nagar in Musheerabad (56.8 mm).
Heavy flooding particularly affected the Shaikpet flyover and filled the entire road with water that did not drain. This major traffic jam left cars and two-wheelers stuck. In the Tolichowki area, CI Ramesh Nayak and staff arrived on the scene, helped clear the congestion, and moved vehicles trapped in the water.
Citywide disruptions reported
Hyderabad and Cyberabad traffic police used their officials' X (formerly Twitter) handles to issue a series of alerts as heavy rain inundated key roads and flyovers. Water accumulation slowed traffic movement to a crawl in numerous locations. Hyderabad traffic police listed affected areas, including the stretch near Chutney's, Sulthan Uloom College, Panjagutta Junction, Vengal Rao Park, and the road from VV Statue towards Shadan College. Waterlogging also affected Ranigunj Junction, Mehdi Function Hall at Ayodhya Junction, and KCP Junction.
The Cyberabad Traffic Police reported similar conditions in the IT corridor, where waterlogging at Woodex in Madhapur and slow traffic movement near GSM Mall in Miyapur, the PJR Flyover, and IKEA Junction disrupted the normal flow.
Commuters advised to seek alternate routes
Hyderabad and Cyberabad police urged motorists to avoid waterlogged stretches and use alternate routes. Police also advised caution in low-lying areas. The Shaikpet flyover alert reported heavy traffic towards Tolichowki and recommended avoiding the stretch entirely.
Intense rainfall causes recurring urban flooding in the city. Police and Hydra teams are deployed at several locations to manage the situation and clear the water.
