HYDERABAD: Power poles and 220kV high-tension towers left in the middle of busy and internal roads have become hazardous, causing traffic congestion and posing risks to motorists.

Residents in Kushaiguda, AS Rao Nagar, Kapra, Mallapur and surrounding colonies said the lack of coordination among government departments and arbitrary decisions by officials had turned their lives difficult. Even after road widening, the poles and towers were not shifted, forcing vehicles to manoeuvre dangerously.

High-tension lines over homes, markets

In Mallapur’s Marri Guda, Ashok Nagar and Nehru Nagar, high-tension lines pass directly above houses, leading to accidents in the past. Similarly, a 220kV transmission corridor runs from Chakripura junction, through Teachers Colony, up to Saket.

They also hold weekly markets directly under these lines: Tuesday in Chakripura, Wednesday in Netaji Nagar, and Saturday in Kandiguda. Residents warned that in case of wire snaps, casualties could be severe. Narrow roads and crowds at these markets further worsen traffic problems.

Call for removal and safety measures

Residents demanded immediate removal of poles and towers obstructing roads and urged authorities to clear encroachments near power corridors. They also sought protective fencing around high-tension installations.

"Anwar Pasha, divisional engineer of the Sainikpuri division, said that they should not hold weekly markets under power lines and must shift them to safe areas."

He added, “If residents file complaints, we will conduct inspections and bring the issue to the notice of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Transmission Corporation of Telangana (Transco) and traffic authorities for resolution.”
