Hyderabad: Postal workers get entry rights, TGPWU demands same privileges

Hyderabad: The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers' Union (TGPWU) welcomed the recent directive issued by GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, instructing all Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to ensure unhindered access for postmen to deliver postal articles at the doorstep in high-rise apartments, gated communities, and multi-storey buildings across Hyderabad.

TGPWU President Shaik Salauddin thanked the GHMC Commissioner and Mayor for this important step. He noted that gig and platform workers, like food delivery agents, couriers, and e-commerce delivery staff, often face similar challenges.

"In many apartments and gated communities, delivery boys are denied entry, restricted from using lifts, or left searching for parking spaces, causing them unnecessary stress, delays, and loss of income. The dignity and safety of delivery workers — whether they belong to the postal department or private platforms — must be respected equally," said Shaik Salauddin, after submitting a formal representation to the GHMC Commissioner highlighting these concerns.

In his representation, TGPWU appealed to the GHMC to extend similar clear instructions to RWAs to provide unhindered access to all delivery workers, including those from private platforms,allow the use of passenger lifts for delivery workers without discrimination and ensure safe and designated parking spaces for delivery vehicles inside the premises.

It's crucial for providing smooth services and for respecting the dignity of lakhs of gig workers who are key to Hyderabad's urban economy.

TGPWU remains committed to working with the GHMC, RWAs, and other stakeholders to create a more dignified and worker-friendly environment across the city, said in a statement.
