Hyderabad Police Commissioner issues clarification on gathering ban ahead of Diwali
Hyderabad: As public concern grows on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, regarding the Hyderabad City Police's ban on gatherings and protests ahead of the Diwali festival, Commissioner C. V. Anand has issued a clarification. The ban, which runs from October 27 to November 28, 2024, is not related to the upcoming Diwali celebrations, as some have speculated.
Ajay P. Nair (@AjayNair4BJP) expressed his frustration by tagging Commissioner Anand, questioning the government's motives: “Is the government scared or what? Implementing Section 144 for gatherings and groups of people, great job for the great government!”

Kannan Aiyangar chimed in, stating, “@VijayGopal_ what does this really mean, especially during a festival like Deepawali where one's relatives visiting can easily be more than 10-15?”
Responding to these queries, Commissioner Anand explained, “This is just to clarify that this notification has nothing to do with the Deepawali festival celebrations. There are some other groups of people who are planning various types of agitations, surprise raids on the Secretariat, the Chief Minister's residence, the DGP office, Raj Bhavan, and other locations. We have intelligence about this, and this notification is to provide legal backing for any police action in arresting or detaining such elements.”
He added, “This is routinely done by police all over the country as needed. This is not a curfew, as some are falsely claiming. So, relax.”
