Hyderabad: Hyderabad is set to further expand its urban transportation network with the approval of Phase II of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project. The Telangana government has sanctioned a massive budget of Rs 24,269 crore for five new corridors, totaling 76.4 kilometers.

This project, a joint venture between the Telangana government and the Government of India, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution in the rapidly growing city.

Phase I of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, a world-record holder for the largest Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode metro rail project, has been immensely successful. The 69-kilometer network, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and world-class amenities, serves over 5 lakh daily commuters.

Phase II: A Strategic Expansion

To cater to the growing needs of the city and promote equitable development, the government has identified six new corridors for Phase II.

Part A:

• Corridor IV: Nagole - Shamshabad RGIA (Airport Corridor) - 36.8 km
• Corridor V: Raidurg - Kokapet Neopolis - 11.6 km
• Corridor VI: MGBS - Chandrayangutta (Old City Corridor) - 7.5 km
• Corridor VII: Miyapur - Patancheru - 13.4 km
• Corridor VIII: LB Nagar - Hayat Nagar - 7.1 km

Part B:

• Corridor IX: Shamshabad RGIA - Fourth City (Skill University) - 40 km

The remaining Part A of the Phase II project, consisting of five corridors totaling 76.4 km, is estimated to cost Rs 24,269 crore. This joint venture between the Telangana government and the Government of India will be funded as follows:

• Government of Telangana: Rs 7,313 crore (30%)
• Government of India: Rs 4,230 crore (18%)
• Debt from JICA, ADB, NDB, etc.: Rs 11,693 crore (48%)
• PPP component: Rs 1,033 crore (4%)

The government is also exploring the possibility of a 40-kilometer extension, Corridor IX, connecting Shamshabad Airport to the Fourth City (Skill University). Detailed planning and field surveys for this corridor are underway.
