Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Rail will soon complete seven years in service. During these years, the city metro service has recorded a ridership of 63.40 crore passengers.

The people of Hyderabad saw the first metro chugged along from Miyapur on November 29, 2017, and since then, the city’s public transportation witnessed a substantial surge in ridership. Presently,  about 5 lakh people use the metro services daily, and the number of commuters is growing due to increasing vehicular traffic in the city.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) covers a total of 69 km and operates three corridors from Miyapur to LB Nagar, JBS station to MGBS, and Nagole to Raidurg. Delhi Metro has the most extensive network covering a total of 415 km, while Bengaluru comes a distant second with a total network length of 74 km. Earlier, Hyderabad held the position of the second-largest metro network in India. Now, Hyderabad Metro has slipped to third position in terms of operation network.

Recently, the Telangana government gave its nod for the detailed project report (DPR) for the second phase of the Hyderabad metro, which will cover 76.4 km across five corridors. Meanwhile, other cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai are rapidly expanding their networks.
