HYDERABAD: The Hussainsagar 2.0 project, aimed at urban beautification and boosting tourism, is back on the agenda after Chief Minister Revanth Reddy made a special mention of it.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), through its wing Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (HUMTA), had earlier prepared detailed designs for a skywalk and cycling track around Hussainsagar. The plan includes entertainment zones, nightlife shopping, and tourism facilities developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Officials said the project proposes a 10km elevated skywalk connecting Khairatabad metro station, Imax theatre, Necklace Road, People’s Plaza, Tank Bund and Indira Park. Entry and exit points will be set up at multiple locations. The skywalk will be 5.5 metres wide, including a 3-metre cycling track, a 2-metre footpath, and a central green median.

Tourists will be able to access Sanjeevaiah Park, People’s Plaza, Jalavihar, MMTS station, Lake View Park, NTR Gardens, Lumbini Park, the new Secretariat and the Ambedkar statue directly from the skywalk.

Officials said no other city in India has such a facility, making it the first of its kind in the country.

Cost and additional features

The estimated cost is ₹200 crore, at ₹20 crore per kilometre. Plans also include floating basketball courts and a cricket arena on the lake, similar to facilities in Singapore. Round-the-clock shopping centres and restaurants are also proposed.

The project, if completed, is expected to add to the attraction of Necklace Road and Tank Bund, alongside landmarks such as the Secretariat, Ambedkar statue, NTR Garden, Lumbini Park, Sanjeevaiah Park and Lake View Park. Officials said it would give Hyderabad global recognition as a tourism destination.
