Drainage modernisation file stuck, residents face hardship

GAUTAMNAGAR:  Modernisation of the underground drainage system in Gautamnagar division under Malkajgiri circle has remained on paper, with no progress for months. Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials had prepared proposals six months ago, but approvals are still pending, leaving residents to struggle with frequent sewage overflow.

2,920 families hit across three colonies

Ekalavya Nagar, Gautamnagar and Vaninagar colonies face inundation even after a brief spell of rain. About 2,920 families in these colonies are affected. Earlier, ₹1.36 crore was sanctioned from collector’s funds for pipeline works, of which ₹66 lakh was earmarked for Ekalavya Nagar, ₹35 lakh each for Gautamnagar and Vaninagar. However, after changes in government and officials, the files stalled and the works never took off.

MLA meets water board MD

Recently, MLA Marri Rajasekhar Reddy met Water Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy and requested release of funds to take up the pending works. Congress party representatives also submitted a memorandum to senior officials highlighting the issue.

Temporary measures planned

Following continuous reports on the problem, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials have responded. They proposed laying a 100-dia RCC pipeline at a cost of ₹13 lakh in Ekalavya Nagar to allow storm water to drain smoothly. Residents, however, complain that the drainage system in Gautamnagar remains disorganised and ineffective.
