Hyderabad: In the wake of heavy rainfall that forced the opening of 10 gates of the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar twin reservoirs, the overflow of the Musi River has caused significant damage to several low-lying areas in the old city of Hyderabad.

Ground-Level assessments and localized damage

Initial reports indicate that 20 houses have collapsed across Mughal Nagar A, Mughal Nagar B, and Ambedkar Nagar in the Karwan constituency. The overflow also caused property losses, washing away two Bolero pickup vans, four autorickshaws, and six two-wheelers. A car service station was submerged, and a cylinder godown’s wall collapsed, resulting in gas cylinders being carried away. Affected families in Mughal Nagar B were moved to a function hall where food was arranged.

Floodwaters disrupted power at the Mughal Nagar and Ziaguda substations, prompting urgent requests for mobile transformers and safety checks on a transmission tower located inside the Musi Riverbed. Authorities escalated concerns to TSTRANSCO to ensure public safety.

AIMIM MLA Kausar Mohiuddin and local officials inspected Karwan, confirming heavy damage. AIMIM legislators visited other affected areas. In Kishanbagh, MLA Mohd Mubeen distributed food and medicine in Asadbaba Nagar, while MLA Balala Ahmed visited Moosa Nagar. AIMIM teams continue supporting families.

State government's inspection and safety measures

Telangana state Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, Mayor Gadwal Vijaya Lakshmi, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan, and others inspected the infrastructure. The Chadarghat Bridge was submerged, and the side walls were damaged. Prabhakar ordered the police to restrict access and stated that the bridge would reopen after an engineer's inspection.

The team also visited the flooded MGBS bus station, where passengers had been safely rescued. With buses diverted to alternative routes due to the flooding, Prabhakar directed RTC officials to clearly inform the public about the changes. He emphasized the provision of essentials, such as drinking water, food, and milk, at rehabilitation centres and urged people to avoid non-essential travel and refrain from returning to flooded homes.

Prabhakar stated that various departments are working in coordination to prevent loss of life. In comments directed at the opposition, he said, “It is not right for the opposition to speak irresponsibly,” adding that no one can resist nature and the focus should be on public safety.
