Gayatri colony, Amar society, Sriramnagar hit by severe floods
HYDERABAD: Several neighbourhoods in the city remained inundated after heavy rain, with residents urging immediate measures to prevent repeated flooding.
At Gayatri Colony in Ameerpet, floodwater from upstream drains entered homes, forcing residents to wade through waist-deep water. Locals said that removing silt in nearby canals had partially eased flow but stressed that the city needed similar action to prevent stagnation.
In Madhapur’s Amar Society and adjoining colonies, rising water levels in Durgam Cheruvu caused severe flooding. Residents warned officials that unless they reduced the lake level, more areas would be inundated. They suggested that the irrigation department and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation coordinate to regulate water discharge.
Sriramnagar residents demand new canal to Hussainsagar outflow
At Sriramnagar in Baglingampally, hundreds of houses remained cut off. Residents said the closure of an old drain and encroachment of government land worsened the flooding. They demanded that workers lay a new canal to connect stormwater directly to the Hussainsagar outflow channel. “We have to use pumps but water keeps entering. Unless officials build a proper outlet, this crisis will continue,” a resident told officials.
Hydra Commissioner A V Ranganath visited the affected colonies on Thursday. He assured residents that desilting would be taken up in Gayatrinagar and immediate action would be initiated in Sriramnagar to construct a link drain within two days. “Cloudburst conditions with over 15 cm rainfall in one hour have worsened the situation. We must prepare long-term solutions,” he said.
