Hyderabad: A 41-year-old female teacher from Hyderabad lost ₹2,02,500 in an online fraud after being contacted via Facebook Messenger by a person posing as "Tony William" with a UK-based phone number ( 44 7909739607).
The victim received a call from the fraudster, who claimed to be wealthy and living in London. He told her he had seen her Facebook profile, liked her and her family, and had no one to inherit his wealth. Gaining her trust, he promised to send her a parcel containing a diamond ring and a gold chain, and even shared photos of the items.
Later, the fraudster informed her that the parcel had reached Delhi Airport but could only be delivered to her in Hyderabad after she paid for an "IMF Certificate." After the initial payment, he continued demanding more money under various pretexts. The victim ultimately realized she had been cheated and filed an online complaint. The total amount lost was ₹2,02,500.
