Hyderabad: Heavy rains and intense thunderstorms affected parts of Hyderabad on the night of March 21, 2025. The storms began late in the evening and caused significant disruptions, particularly in areas like Kondapur, where roads flooded due to the downpour.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, the highest rainfall was recorded at the University of Hyderabad in Rangareddy district’s Serilingampally mandal, with 54.5 mm. Medchal Malkajgiri district's Kukatpally, including areas such as Allapur Vivekananda Nagar and Moosapet Circle, recorded 50.8 mm of rainfall. In Rangareddy district’s Serilingampally mandal, Madhapur's Chandanagar received 48.8 mm, while Khairatabad Circle-19 (Yousufguda) in Hyderabad district received 48.5 mm of rain.
On the other hand, the least rainfall was recorded in Medchal Malkajgiri district’s Uppal mandal, at Rajiv Nagar Community Hall, Circle-1 (Kapra), which received 23.0 mm.
Before the storm began, Telangana Weatherman (@balaji25_t) shared an update: “Crazy thunderstorms all over Hyderabad. Enjoy the relief, guys. We definitely deserved this spell after facing terrible heatwaves last week.” He further warned of severe storms across North Hyderabad, predicting intense rainfall for 30-40 minutes before reducing. A second moderate-intensity spell was also expected within the hour.
If all these precious rainwater is diverted to underground by strategic groundwater improvement techniques like rainwater harvesting pits, storm drain channels, we hardly would have any water problems in Hyderabad City 🤷 https://t.co/KWpKMUOJpj

Throughout the night, powerful storms continued across areas like Miyapur, Tellapur, and Gachibowli, with heavy rainfall reported in Nallagandla and Serlingampally. Kondapur Road was notably flooded after the storms.
On March 22, 2025, Telangana Weatherman issued a thunderstorm warning for the region, predicting severe storms in Central and South Telangana, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours. Hailstorms were also expected. He urged residents to stay alert.
In light of the flooding in Kondapur, the Weatherman suggested improving Hyderabad’s groundwater management through rainwater harvesting pits and storm drain channels to better handle future storms and prevent waterlogging.
Safety Advisory for Residents:
