Meet Hyderabad’s Dr. Abhirama: The expert neurosurgeon and mentor redefining brain surgery
Hyderabad: Dr. Abhirama Chandra Gabbita, a 37-year-old and Hyderabad-based senior consultant neurosurgeon at AIG Hospitals, specializes in neuro-oncology and skull base surgery. Outside of his medical practice, he leads an active lifestyle, enjoys food, practices aerial yoga, and is a coffee enthusiast. He is also a mentor for Mission Brain.
Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Dr. Abhirama Chandra Gabbita explained his work, “I am a senior consultant neurosurgeon at AIG Hospitals. My focus is neuro-oncology and skull base surgery. I perform brain surgery without leaving any cognitive footprint.” When asked about the types of surgeries he performs, he said, “I handle neurosurgery, including all brain and spine surgeries.”
On his approach to patient care, Dr. Abhirama explained the importance of clinical symptoms over imaging. “I use connectomics, which maps brain networks and tracts. This is the first connectomics-based approach of its kind in India. I perform minimally invasive brain and spine surgeries. I believe in a personalized and holistic approach that combines surgical precision, technology, and clear communication with patients and their families. We use AI-driven diagnostics, digital twins, and precision-guided interventions to tailor treatment for each patient.”
Discussing recent advancements, he mentioned, “I recently performed a skull base tumor removal through the eye socket using an endoscope, without cutting any bone. We regularly do minimally invasive spine surgeries guided by connectomics and AI, which help protect brain function.”
About his experience at AIG Hospitals, Dr. Abhirama said, “It’s an honor to work here. AIG encourages state-of-the-art procedures and provides a strong support system for clinical care, research, and innovation. The collaborative environment and access to multidisciplinary teams help us deliver advanced neurosurgical care.”
When asked for advice to aspiring medical professionals, he said, “Follow your passion, stay curious and humble, and keep learning. Medicine is evolving quickly, and integrating new technologies is essential. But always remember that compassion, ethics, and patient-centered care are the foundation of this profession. Seek mentors, engage in research, and aim to contribute as more than just a doctor. Become a thought leader.”
