Hyderabad looks to Bangalore for inspiration in disaster management
Hyderabad: In a move to enhance disaster preparedness, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) team visited Bangalore to study the city's conservation, restoration, and management of natural disasters.
HYDRAA team, led by Commissioner AV Ranganath, focuses on understanding the operations of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center (KSNDMC) and the Bengaluru Megha Sandesha app, which are crucial for Bangalore's disaster management.
At KSNDMC, the HYDRAA team was briefed on the center's work in providing advance rain information to the public, including predictions on rainfall quantity and alerts for flood-prone areas and potential traffic jams. The team also learned about the methods used to suggest alternative routes.
The team delved into the functionalities of the Bengaluru Meghasandesh app, a key part of the study. Bengaluru MeghaSandesha, a weather app developed from KSNDMC-GoK, under Urban Flood Model for Bangalore (UFM) project in collaboration with Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore provides information on Rainfall, flood, lightning, thunderstorm, and alerts for citizens of Bangalore. The app provides Ward and zone wise real-time information of Bangalore on rainfall, floods, traffic jams, and hailstorms, allowing the authorities and the public to stay informed and prepared.
HYDRAA team visits Bangalore to study
The HYDRAA team examined the KSNDMC’s sensor system for monitoring water flow in flood canals and detecting garbage accumulation areas that contribute to flooding. They discussed using 20 years of data to estimate flood risk areas based on rainfall.
During the visit, Commissioner AV Ranganath inspected the weather station at the KSNDMC center, which records rainfall, wind speed, and temperature. This information is crucial for understanding the city's weather patterns and predicting natural disasters.
The HYDRAA team, including Regional Fire Officers V. Papaiah and A. Jayaprakash, Assistant Engineer Nagaraju, and Inspector Vijay Aditya, was accompanied by Commissioner A.V. Ranganath throughout the study tour.
