Hyderabad: Despite large-scale mosquito control drives, dengue and viral fever cases continue to rise in Hyderabad.

According to official figures, up to September 12, Secunderabad reported 290 dengue cases, followed by Charminar zone with 200, Khairatabad with 175, Kukatpally with 175, Serilingampally with 160, and LB Nagar with 105 cases.

Senior IAS officers, zonal commissioners, entomologists and over 2,500 staff have been deployed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for anti-larval operations and fogging. But residents say the measures have failed to contain mosquito menace.

“Despite spending about ₹20 crore annually, the problem is worsening every year,” a health department official admitted. Diesel supplied for fogging is allegedly being diverted and sold in the black market.

Locals complained that GHMC staff demand ₹1,000 every month from colony and apartment associations for carrying out fogging. Officials’ plans to use digital cards to check diesel theft have also failed. Cold fogging is reportedly being blocked by corrupt officers.

Hospitals are struggling to handle the influx of patients. At Niloufer Children’s Hospital, 700 of the 1,000 beds are occupied by fever patients, with 15 children in ICU battling dengue. Similar scenes are reported from Gandhi, Osmania General and ESI hospitals at Erragadda. Private hospitals are also overflowing with dengue cases.
