Teen delivery worker brutally attacked in Hyderabad’s Sultanshahi, police begin probe
Hyderabad: A 17-year-old delivery boy was severely assaulted in the old city area of Hyderabad, with an alleged communal motive behind the attack.
The victim, Mohammed Nadeem Ul Qureshi, was delivering a parcel in the Sultanshahi area on Monday evening when the incident occurred.
According to Nadeem's formal complaint, at around 6:30 PM on October 7, he had parked his two-wheeler opposite the Valmiki Temple in Sultanshahi due to heavy rainfall. While waiting, three unknown individuals approached him and questioned his presence. “Without giving him any reason or allowing him to respond, they suddenly assaulted him by hitting him on his face with their hands,” the complaint states.
The assault left Nadeem with bleeding injuries to his lips and nose and, critically, broke one of his front teeth. Amjed Ullah Khan, Spokesman of the Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), provides a more specific and alarming narrative. Khan claims that the assailants first asked the boy for his name. Upon identifying him as a Muslim, they allegedly proceeded to beat him very badly.
MBT alleges communal angle
“This is a clear case of communal targeting. The boy was attacked only after they ascertained his religious identity,” said Khan, who visited Nadeem at Osmania General Hospital.
Khan reported that Nadeem's condition was serious enough that he fainted at the Moghalpura Police Station after filing his complaint and had to be admitted to the hospital for further treatment.
Acting on Nadeem's complaint, the Moghalpura Police registered a case. The police booked the accused under Section 117(2) (Punishment for abetment if act abetted is committed in consequence) read with Section 3(5) (Act endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“On complaint of Nadeem Ul Qureshi, the delivery boy who went to deliver a parcel opposite Valmik, an investigation was taken up. But a very sad part of this FIR is that in a very clever way, the Moghalpura Police had removed the communal angle from the FIR and booked them under bailable sections,” alleged Khan, who visited Nadeem at Osmania General Hospital.
He has now appealed to Hyderabad Police Commissioner, V.C. Sajjanar, to intervene and inquire as to why the victim's assertion of a religiously motivated attack was not incorporated into the formal charges.
The police have reportedly identified one of the alleged attackers and have taken in for questioning. Further investigation is underway.
