Hyderabad bus fares to increase starting October 6 to fund electric fleet expansion
Hyderabad: Commuters in Hyderabad and Secunderabad will pay more for bus travel starting October 6, 2025, following the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation's (TGSRTC) fare revision, approved by the state government. The increase, ranging from Rs 5 to Rs 10, is intended to help fund a large-scale transition to electric buses.
The new fare structure covers every city bus in the Twin Cities. Passengers on City Ordinary, Metro Express, and their electric versions will pay Rs 5 more for the first three stages and Rs 10 extra from the fourth stage onwards. For air-conditioned rides like Metro Deluxe and E-Metro AC, the fare is Rs 5 for the first stage and Rs 10 for each subsequent stage.
This decision, approved by the Government of Telangana on September 23, is directly linked to the financial requirements of a major green initiative, “Clean and Green Hyderabad”. The corporation is undertaking an Rs 392 crore infrastructure project to support the introduction of 2,800 new electric buses. The state has set a target to replace all diesel buses within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits by 2027.
Building infrastructure for an electric fleet
Moreover, the transition to an electric fleet is already in progress. Currently, 265 electric buses operate from six depots within the limits of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). High-tension power connections for charging have been installed at these depots at a cost of Rs 8 crore per depot, a project completed in coordination with TGSPDCL and TRANSCO.
Meanwhile, to accommodate the upcoming fleet, TGSRTC will significantly expand this infrastructure. Plans include establishing HT charging facilities at 19 more existing depots, setting up 10 new dedicated charging stations, and creating 10 new depots. Additionally, 275 electric buses are scheduled to be introduced later this year.
TGSRTC appealed to citizens to support this eco-friendly shift and help the corporation meet its environmental goals. “The electric bus initiative is a revolutionary step toward a pollution-free Hyderabad. We urge the public to join us in this green journey and continue supporting RTC services as they always have,” said a statement released by TGSRTC.
