Hyderabad braces for intense Summer ahead, warns Telangana Weatherman

Hyderabad is bracing for a harsh summer, with the Telangana Weatherman predicting a severe heatwave season similar to 2017 or 2018. This is due to a La Niña to Neutral/Weak La Niña pattern expected this year, which typically leads to good monsoon rains but also intense heat waves. While some respite may come from occasional summer storms, residents are advised to prepare for the heat by staying hydrated, using sunscreen, wearing light clothing, scheduling outdoor activities during cooler hours, and staying cool indoors with fans, air conditioners, or homemade ice packs. The article also provides short-term updates on expected temperatures, with very hot temperatures expected over the next three days, followed by a slight drop from March 5-7.

In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Telangana Weatherman (@balaji25_t) shared his outlook for the upcoming months. “Terrible Summer ahead. Earlier, I mentioned two possible scenarios: either 2017 or 2018. With more clarity now, it appears we’ll be seeing a La Niña to Neutral/Weak La Niña pattern again this year,” he stated.

He explained that this could mean a severe summer with intense heatwaves, though occasional summer storms might provide some relief. "La Niña to Neutral/Weak La Niña conditions typically lead to good monsoon rains, but we’ll have to wait until May for more clarity on the monsoon outlook,” he added.

In the meantime, he advised residents to prepare for the upcoming heat. He also provided a short-term update, saying, “Very hot temperatures are expected over the next three days, especially on March 3 and 4 during the afternoon. Nights will remain warm as well. However, from March 5-7, we can expect a slight drop in temperatures, with night temperatures decreasing and daytime highs reducing by 1-2°C.”

The latest temperature readings from the Meteorological Department (MET), Hyderabad, show that at 8:30 a.m. on March 3, temperatures in various parts of Hyderabad were already rising. GHMC Begumpet recorded 35.4°C, Hayath Nagar and Rajendra Nagar both reported 35°C, and the maximum temperature in Badrachalam reached 38°C. The minimum temperatures varied across the city, with Patancheru at 15.2°C, Begumpet at 20.8°C, and Medak at 17.3°C.

As the summer season approaches, experts have recommended several tips to stay safe and healthy during the heat:

1. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and consuming hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables.
2. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 and wear sunglasses. Opt for light, breathable clothing.
3. Schedule outdoor activities during the early morning or evening to avoid the midday heat.
4. Use fans, air conditioning, or homemade ice packs to cool your living space.
5. Eat light meals such as salads, grilled foods, and cold dishes to stay cool.

Residents are urged to take necessary precautions and stay prepared for the intense heat this summer.
