BIS seizes 30,000 uncertified sanitary pads in Kushaiguda
Hyderabad: Officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Hyderabad branch, raided a facility in Kushaiguda on Monday, April 21, 2025, where they found around 30,000 sanitary pads and over 7,000 label covers ready for sale, all of which lacked the mandatory ISI mark. The products were seized during the operation.
The Government of India requires sanitary pads to have BIS certification under IS 5405:2019 standards, as stated in a Quality Control Order. Selling, storing, or manufacturing sanitary pads without this certification is a punishable offense.
Acting on a tip-off regarding uncertified sanitary napkins being stored in large quantities, BIS officials, led by P.V. Srikanth, Director of the BIS Hyderabad branch, carried out the raid. The operation was supervised by Joint Directors Savita and Rakesh Tanneeru.
Under Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016, the production, sale, or storage of uncertified products can result in severe penalties. The first offense carries a penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of Rs. 2 lakhs. For a second offense, the punishment can extend to five years in prison and a fine of up to Rs. 5 lakhs, with subsequent violations resulting in even stricter penalties.
The Government of India has mandated BIS certification for 679 products under various Quality Control Orders. Director P.V. Srikanth urged consumers to verify product quality using the BIS Care App and report violations to ensure safety and compliance.
