Social media claims of paranormal activity at Hyderabad Airport dismissed by officials
Hyderabad: A recent viral social media post has sparked speculation about alleged paranormal activity at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), prompting airport authorities to issue an official response dismissing the claims.
The controversy began after a post by the Instagram handle zeezest claimed that the airport is haunted due to graves that were reportedly not relocated properly during its construction. The caption read, “Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad is said to have a spooky past. Stories say some old graves weren’t moved properly during construction. Now, people claim ghostly spirits still wander the terminal at night.”

The post, titled "Freaky Friday," quickly went viral, with many users reacting with surprise. However, frequent travellers and Hyderabad residents were quick to refute the claims. User Suchetana Ghosh commented, “I have been frequently flying from RGIA for almost 12 years now, even at the dead of the night, but never experienced anything! Stupid stories.”
Another user, Raghavendra_maverick, called it “fake propaganda to tarnish the image.” Bano.fitindia added, “I live in Hyderabad. Must have been to the airport at least 100 times, during both day and night. Nothing has happened.” Several users tagged the official RGIA Instagram handle seeking clarification.
Responding to the speculation, the RGIA official account stated, “A few social media posts claiming paranormal activity at RGI Airport are entirely false and misleading, spread through fictional content on social media channels. We urge passengers to follow the official platform for credible information and not rely on unofficial sources.”

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, located in Shamshabad, about 24 kilometres south of Hyderabad, was inaugurated on March 23, 2008, replacing the Begumpet Airport. Built over 5,500 acres, it is the largest airport in India by area and is operated by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), a public-private consortium.
The airport has several distinctions, it was the first in India to launch domestic e-boarding in 2015 and international e-boarding in 2020. It is also one of the top 10 airports in the world according to AirHelp rankings. Between April 2024 and March 2025, it handled over 29 million passengers and more than 167,000 tonnes of cargo.
RGIA was India’s first greenfield airport developed under a public-private partnership model. It houses an integrated passenger terminal, cargo terminal, two runways, a solar power plant, aviation training centres, a fuel farm, and MRO (maintenance, repair and operations) facilities. Despite the recent online rumors, officials maintain that there is no evidence of any paranormal activity at the airport.
