HMWSSB slaps Rs. 10,000 fine on hotel for causing sewage overflow in Malakpet
Hyderabad: A hotel near Nalgonda Crossroads has been fined ₹10,000 by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) for illegally connecting its sewer line to the main sewer network and dumping food and solid waste. The violation led to overflowing manholes and sewage spilling onto the roads, causing inconvenience to the public.
HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy, during an inspection on Tuesday, expressed strong displeasure over the hotel's negligence. He directed officials to ensure a silt chamber is constructed by the hotel within 10 days, warning that failure to comply would result in the hotel being sealed in coordination with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
The inspection was part of a review of ongoing sewage repair works near Nalgonda Crossroads, Malakpet. A major sewage issue near Akbar Plaza has caused traffic disruptions. Officials revealed that a two-decade-old sewer line in the area had collapsed. With no proper outlet, sewage has been overflowing during rain, further aggravated by the presence of a GHMC stormwater drain and heavy traffic, making it difficult to locate the damaged section.
Ashok Reddy announced plans to lay a new sewer line from Nalgonda Crossroads to Malakpet RUB as a temporary solution to prevent overflow. He instructed officials to redirect sewage from nearby buildings into designated outlets and to de-silt all surrounding sewer lines and manholes to prevent further blockages.
He also highlighted the need for a coordinated survey by HMWSSB and GHMC to identify and separate interconnected sewer and stormwater lines across the city, aiming to prevent recurring issues. Operation Director Amarender Reddy, CGM Nagender, GM, and other officials were present during the inspection.
