Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has stepped up its “Motor-Free Tap Drive” to stop illegal water extraction through electric motors. On the second day of the campaign, Managing Director Ashok Reddy personally inspected areas under O&M Division-6, focusing on Madhura Nagar in SR Nagar.

The campaign aims to address low water pressure issues and prevent wastage caused by unauthorized motor usage. Since the drive began, officials have identified 175 illegal motors, seized 64, and penalized 84 consumers.

On the second day alone, 134 illegal motors were identified across all divisions. Of these, 32 motors were seized and penalties were imposed on 38 users. The highest number of seizures are 20 motors and took place in O&M Division-6, SR Nagar.

Inspections were carried out door to door, particularly in areas facing low water pressure and in buildings such as hostels and commercial establishments. Several violations were found where consumers were using electric motors to draw excess water. The motors were seized and penalties were imposed.

At one hostel, a 2 HP agricultural motor was found in use. Ashok Reddy, visibly upset, confronted the owner and asked how others could receive water if one household was drawing more than its share. He immediately ordered the water supply to the hostel to be cut off for a month and blacklisted the property from accessing water tankers.

A similar violation was found in a nearby building. As per the MD’s orders, the water connection was terminated and tanker supply was suspended for one month.

Ashok Reddy directed officials to continue daily inspections in SR Nagar during supply hours over the next week. He said the drive will continue across Hyderabad for the next 60 days. Those caught using illegal motors will face motor seizure, a penalty of ₹5,000 for repeat offences, and possible criminal charges.

Residents in previously affected low-pressure areas have reported improved water flow since the illegal motors were removed. Many have expressed appreciation toward the Water Board officials.

Senior officials, including CVO Gyanender Reddy, CI Laxmareddy, GM Hari Shankar, and other DGM-level officers, participated in the drive.
