Hyderabad: Water reservoirs built by the water board in different parts of Greater Hyderabad are either Ground Level Storage Reservoir (GLSR) or Elevated Level Storage Reservoir (ELSR) and it is an Herculean task to clean these reservoirs.

As the name suggests, ELSR is an elevated reservoir built to maintain water pressure and supply to areas at higher altitudes while the GLSR helps in distributing water efficiently at ground level in the city limits.

To overcome this problem, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) had decided to employ the “advanced German technology” to clean and transform drinking water reservoirs into zero-bacterial reservoirs.

Under this state-of-the-art German cleaning technology, a high-pressure rotary jet is utilised in combination with powerful antibacterial agents. According to officials, this process will ensure total disinfection of storage tanks and also improve the overall quality of the drinking water supply.

This cleaning method, called the "T-Cleaning Process," uses a high-pressure rotary jet nozzle that releases water with force to easily remove sediment, algae, and harmful bacteria which are stuck to the walls of the tank. The anti-bacterial agents will prevent the growth of harmful microorganisms.

Officials have said that the cleaning work will be carried out in a phased manner to avoid any disruption to the daily water supply. The cleaning will be completed by the end of summer, they added. The cleaning process initiative will be carried out with an estimated cost of Rs. 23.63 lakh.

Under the current phase, reservoirs at KPHB Phase-IV and Phase-VII (5.0 million liters each), Borabanda (5.0 ML), Gayathrinagar (5.0 ML), Yellammabanda (5.0 ML ELSR and 0.60 ML ELSR, 6 ML GLSR), and Chintal (1 ML ELSR, 0.6 ML GLSR, 4.0 ML sump) have been identified for cleaning.
