Himayat Sagar Gates Opening: GHMC issues flood alert for Hyderabad's low-lying areas
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) issued a flood safety alert in view of a significant rise in water levels. With increasing water inflows, authorities have decided to open the gates of Himayat Sagar, prompting an alert for residents in low-lying areas under Malakpet Circle.
According to the autorities, the reservoir's water level stands at 1762.2 feet, just 1.3 feet below its Full Tank Level (FTL) of 1763.5 feet. The reservoir is receiving a substantial inflow of 17,000 cusecs, while authorities are releasing 3854 cusecs downstream to manage the water level. Eight gates have been lifted to release 8000 cusecs of water into the Musi River, which has increased the flood threat in the surrounding areas.
According to the advisory, people living in Shankar Nagar, Padma Nagar, Veenayaka Veedhi, Chaderghat, and Moosa Nagar have been advised to remain vigilant and relocate to safer locations if necessary.
Relief centres activated
To assist affected residents, relief centres have been set up at Malakpet Circle: City Model School, Padma Nagar Community Hall, Afzal Nagar Community Hall, and Majid at Shankar Nagar. Fort Goshamahal Circle: Arundhati Community Hall.
