Heavy rainfall in Hyderabad: GHMC issues emergency advisory
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued a special weather alert as the city braces for heavy rainfall over the next two days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), intense showers are anticipated from the evening of August 13 until the evening of August 14, with rainfall accumulations likely to reach 80–150 mm in some areas.
The IMD weather forecasted light to moderate rain during the morning and afternoon of August 13, with short but intense spells leading to 10–30 mm of rainfall. However, the situation is predicted to worsen by evening, with multiple spells of moderate to heavy rain continuing overnight and into the next morning. Some localities may receive as much as 50–100 mm during this period, raising concerns over waterlogging and potential disruptions.
The GHMC has advised residents to stay alert and plan their travel accordingly, particularly avoiding low-lying and flood-prone zones. Authorities have urged citizens to secure essential supplies in advance and stay updated through official channels. Disaster response teams have been put on standby, with pumps and emergency measures in place to tackle possible flooding.
For emergencies, the GHMC helpline (040-21111111) and police emergency number (100) remain active. Commuters have been cautioned about possible traffic delays due to waterlogging, with alternative routes recommended in key areas such as the IT corridors and the Old City. Officials are closely monitoring drainage systems, but residents in vulnerable areas are advised to exercise caution.
