Hyderabad: More than 200 residents from Kranthi Nagar Colony protested on Tuesday. They demanded quick action against a nearby petrol bunk for allegedly contaminating groundwater with petrol and diesel. The problem has lasted for two months. Families are dealing with smelly water and health risks, like skin diseases in children.

How it began

Residents noticed a strong petroleum smell in their water supply two months ago. But at first, they dismissed it. Speaking to HyderabadMail, a resident said, “We first noticed the smell two months ago. Initially, we ignored it; however, as time passed, the odour increased. We have requested the petrol bunk management to rectify the lapses. But, our requests went into deaf ears.

The smell got worse, so they sent samples to The Institute of Health Systems - Laboratory for testing. The lab report confirmed their worst fears: groundwater was contaminated with petroleum products, likely due to leaks from underground storage tanks at the adjacent petrol pump.

The report stated, “Petroleum smell indicates contamination from leaking underground tanks. The petrol bunk’s proximity to the borewell suggests it as the probable source.” It further warned, “Petroleum odours in water are potentially serious and must be addressed urgently.”

Health Crisis and Official Apathy

The resident further lamented that this contamination is seriously affecting our lives. Many people, including children, are suffering from skin diseases. We have already reported this matter to the nearby petrol pump and submitted the water test report to them. However, despite repeated follow-ups, there has been no proper response from their side for the past 15 days.

Protesters plan to escalate the issue with the police, Telangana Pollution Control Board, and GHMC. This comes as the petrol bunk management has been unresponsive. Residents demand immediate inspection and repair of the petrol bunk’s storage tanks.
