As Hyderabad braces for the upcoming monsoon, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has undertaken a comprehensive structural safety drive across the city. In a recent survey, the civic body flagged 428 buildings as structurally unsafe, triggering swift administrative measures to mitigate the risk of monsoon-related disasters.
Of the total buildings identified, 131 have been deemed repairable, while a concerning 297 structures have been declared dangerous and unfit for occupancy. GHMC officials have issued eviction notices for these high-risk buildings to avert any mishaps, particularly in the event of heavy rainfall or waterlogging.
In a high-level video conference with zonal commissioners and town planning officials, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan stressed the importance of proactive governance in ensuring public safety. He issued a stern warning to all involved departments, stating that strict disciplinary action would be taken if any untoward incident occurs due to negligence. “Accountability is paramount, especially when lives are at stake,” Karnan emphasized.
As a precautionary step, the GHMC has temporarily suspended approval for new cellar constructions starting May 30. This measure will remain in place throughout the monsoon season and is aimed at preventing flood-related damage and ensuring the structural stability of buildings under development.
For ongoing construction projects, the civic body has directed builders, contractors, and engineers to implement enhanced safety protocols. These include the construction of robust retaining walls, proper drainage systems, and measures to prevent water stagnation in basement or cellar areas.
With weather forecasts predicting heavy rainfall in the coming weeks, GHMC is intensifying its efforts to protect both lives and urban infrastructure. The corporation is urging residents to cooperate with authorities and report any visibly unstable structures in their neighborhoods.
The proactive steps taken by GHMC reflect a growing emphasis on disaster preparedness and risk mitigation as urban areas face increasing vulnerability to climate-related events.
