Hyderabad: Flyovers have been doing their job of easing traffic congestion on the road network in Hyderabad. However, the spaces beneath are lying unused. Not long ago, the space under the flyover opposite Nexus Mall in KPHB Colony was repurposed to build a sports arena.

Now, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to utilize the space beneath wider flyovers to create lung spaces and sports facilities, especially in areas where middle and lower-income families live and where there aren't enough parks and playgrounds already.

Recently, the chief minister Revanth Reddy urged the civic body to convert the underutilized spaces beneath the flyovers to meet the growing demand for parks and playgrounds in the city.

Following the directive, the GHMC officials are drawing up plans to turn more of those under-flyover spaces into fun and usable areas. It has tasked its six zonal commissioners to conduct field inspections. The 2.5 km long and 24 meters wide Shaikpet flyover is among the first to undergo such a transformation.

During the inspection, Zonal Commissioner Anurag Jayanti realized the potential of using the flyover's vast underpass for various purposes. While children are already using the space for informal play, Jayanti confirmed that the area would soon be officially developed into a sports facility.

The officials are planning to transform these areas into walking paths, seating, and spaces for sports like badminton, skating, and box cricket.

Officials are checking out other flyovers including those at Aramghar, Zoo Park, JNTU, Malkajgiri, Lalapet, Nagole, and Kamineni to see if they can do the same thing.

GHMC officials stated that they are working towards integrating these spaces into the city’s recreational infrastructure. The new facilities aim to enhance public access to open spaces and promote fitness. The goal is to make enough parks in urban neighborhoods.
