GHMC to log history of Hyderabad roads in detail using oblique photography
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has devised a plan to document the history of city roads using oblique photography to create 3D models of roads as this will enable the civic body to assess the need for recarpeting and optimise fund allocation by identifying when and where maintenance is required.
During the rainy season, several main stretches and internal roads cause much inconvenience to the motorists in the city. According to the civic body, the 9,013km-road network in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad comprises 2,846 BT roads and 6,167 km Cement Concrete (CC) roads. However, the civic body has no proper data to review when a CC or BT road was laid or recarpeted over the last few years.
As the top-down ortho imagery is inefficient to track the road structure etc, the GHMC will start using the oblique cameras to visualise the road and its evolving shape. Under this project, the officials would assign a unique ID number to each road in the city and the data on the work done on that particular road such as road laying or recarpeting will be stored in an online database.
The ID number variable will contain details about that particular road including the type of road (BT or CC road), its thickness, the expenditure on the laying of road, subsequent repairs it has gone into and the cumulative expenses. This will give a complete history of the laying and maintenance works of that specific road.
Currently, it is hard for the GHMC officials to track the maintenance of roads in the city. The officials also want to utilise the funds properly as the contractors repeatedly raise concerns about payment of bills while the vigilance investigation in their work has revealed several flaws.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been spending thousands of crores on the maintenance of important roads across the city. Recently, the civic body submitted proposals for Phase-II of the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP) to the standing committee.
