BC Commission alleges GHMC skipped many households in Telangana caste census

The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes (BC) has raised concerns about the incomplete caste census conducted in Hyderabad, specifically within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area. The Commission alleges that the survey, conducted between November 6 and December 25, 2024, failed to reach a significant number of households, particularly in urban areas. This has resulted in a lower recorded percentage of Backward Class population in the region. The Commission has requested an investigation into the matter and has sought specific data from the GHMC regarding the population, households, and survey coverage within the area. The Commission's actions stem from complaints received from residents claiming they were missed during the survey and reports of enumerators failing to visit certain parts of the city. They aim to use the requested information to further investigate the discrepancy and take appropriate action.

Hyderabad: The Chairman of the Telangana Commission for Backward Classes (BC), G. Niranjan, has written to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner, K. Ilambarithi, highlighting concerns over the incomplete caste census conducted in Hyderabad.

The Commission noted that the socio-economic, employment, education, political, and caste survey, carried out by the Telangana government from November 6 to December 25, 2024, did not adequately cover the GHMC area.

According to the government’s report, the survey covered 1,12,15,134 households out of a total of 1,15,71,457, achieving a 96.9% coverage rate. However, it was revealed that 3,56,323 households, predominantly from GHMC and other urban areas, were not surveyed. This gap has led to a significant drop in the percentage of the Backward Class (BC) population in the region, a discrepancy the Commission believes is due to GHMC's inadequate survey efforts.

Complaints have been received from residents claiming they were missed during the survey, and it has been brought to the Commission’s attention that enumerators failed to visit several parts of the city. In light of these issues, the Commission has sought an investigation into the matter and requested the following information from GHMC:

1. Total population residing in the GHMC area.

2. Total population covered in the survey.

3. Total number of households in the GHMC area.

4. Total number of households covered during the survey.

5. Total number of enumeration blocks in the GHMC area.

6. Total number of enumerators and supervisors appointed in the GHMC area.

7. A list of enumerators, including their names and contact details, for each enumeration block.

The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes has requested this information from the GHMC within a week to facilitate further action.
